Visual Preference Screen Guide

This Screen provides a way to present visitors with sets of visual choices and ask which one they prefer, comparing the images representing concepts or ideas to each other.

  • The images can be photos, diagrams, charts, or icons. Additional text can accompany each image.
  • Visitors can provide optional comments about each set of choices.
  • This is a good Screen to choose to get community input on a series of choices that have a visual aspect. You can also use it as a visual way to ask survey type questions.
  • If input on each image separately is preferred, rather than comparing images to one another, consider the Image Rating Screen instead.
  • Instead of using the Standard Survey Screen, consider making the questions visual and using this Screen instead.
  • If locations or location-based projects are already identified, consider using the Project Selection Screen.

How to Build It

This Screen can contain up to 9 sets of images, with up to 8 images in each set.

Content you'll need to prepare:

  1. Up to 9 sets of images, up to 8 images each
  2. Depending on the number and orientation of each set of images, you may need to resize your images
  3. You can add text to each image, space permitting
  4. An optional popup description for each category

Decisions you'll need to make:

  1. Organize your images into sets of choices
  2. The layout/orientation of the images for each choice
  3. Whether optional comments are allowed
  4. Whether the order of choices is tied to Priority Ranking, in which case you will have to generate content for up to 8 sets of images

Keys To Success

  • Try to use images that have relatively equal qualities for the non-essential elements. For instance, avoid a cloudy background in an image if the other images are sunny.
  • Additional text can be provided with each option. Make sure each piece of text begins with words that are unique to the choice as it improves usability and reports as well.
  • Asking participants to choose only one item from a group is a more difficult task than rating each image in a category (Image Rating Screen) but will force people to make a choice and provide you with better data.
